About my time in Italy

During my Eurosummer of 2023, I spent the longest amount of time in Italy than any other country. At the start of week three, I made my way to Catania, which is located on the island of Sicily.

So much went wrong in Catania, but I still made the most of it and gave it the benefit of the doubt. I would like to go back someday, just not during the summer. The heatwave was brutal, so I would love to give it another chance at a different time of year.

I made my way over to the mainland, and then gradually made my way north towards Switzerland. I had a friend in Rome, so I stayed with her for about 8 days, then I moved on to other cities like Pisa, Bologna, and Florence. I absolutely adored each one of them, but I think of those three Bologna was my favorite. There was something so charming about it that for years afterwards I have thought about buying a house there. Maybe one day!

Then I made my way to Milan, which I have to admit, I didn't love. Going into it, I was coming from smaller cities that felt more like what I was expecting Italy to look like. I had no idea that Milan was going to be so modern. What I didn't realize is that much of Milan was destroyed in wartime, therefore older buildings like you see in other cities no longer exist in Milan, or they’re a lot less common.

I kept heading further north to Lake Como before making my way through Switzerland and back into Italy in the mountains in a small village called San Bartolomeo Val Carvagna. How on Earth did I end up in such a small village? Before I planned my Europe summer, I zoomed out on Airbnb just to look at Airbnbs all over Europe. I saw this one Airbnb in the mountains, and I made it my mission to go there. so as I outlined where I would be going, I made sure to add this Airbnb to my plans.

From there, I made my way over to Domodossola, because that's the city where I was going to be meeting my college friend before heading to Switzerland for a week.

Places I visited while in Italy

During the summer of 2023, I spent 3 months traveling around Europe. During that time, I spent 6 weeks traveling from Sicily to northern Italy, with stops in Catania, Rome, Pisa, Florence, Bologna, Milan, San Bartolomeo val Cavargna, and Domodossola.

Learn more about each below!

Catania

Such a beautiful city in Sicily.

I went during a heat wave, so I didn't experience the city at its best, but I still loved walking the beautiful streets.

Rome

So much history, not enough time! I spent 8 days in Rome exploring this charming city while also visiting one of my best friends.

Pisa

Have you ever wanted to take the iconic picture holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa? Well I did, plus a few extras.

I was able to see the Leaning Tower for its 850th Anniversary celebration. So cool!

Florence

I spent 5 days, 4 nights in Florence exploring the beautiful streets of Florence. The Duomo was absolutely stunning, and I enjoyed every minute of my time there.

Bologna

I fell in love with the Red City the moment I got off the train! I absolutely loved Bologna. Many buildings were hues of yellow, orange, and red, and it felt like a happy place to be.

I loved it so much that I'm considering buying a home here.

Milan

As I made my way north through Italy, I made a 5 day stop in Milan. Going on top of Milan's Duomo made the whole trip worth it to me because it was so incredibly beautiful.

Personally I didn't love the city of Milan. I did like it, don't get me wrong, but I think I had an expectation in my head of it being more historic and less modern than it was.

I still very much enjoyed my time there, and everything I saw I liked.

Lake Como

In northern Italy, you'll find the picturesque Lake Como. I spent 5 days there exploring the lake and the surrounding areas. This lovely town is even more beautiful in person.

San Bartolomeo val Cavargna

About an hour from Lugano is the picturesque village of San Bartolomeo Val Cavargna. It's a place I had never heard of but I'm so glad I found.

When I was planning my Europe trip, I zoomed out on Airbnb just to see cool places in my price range all throughout Europe, and I found this one specific Airbnb that I knew I had to visit someday. I was so tempted to go there that I almost booked it for 2 months, but then kept it as a favorite for later on.

As I kept booking places to stay throughout the trip, I moved some things around to be able to go there.

Domodossola

This small city was supposed to just be a meeting point for me and my friend to head to Switzerland, but it became one of my favorite places in Italy because of its combination of mountains and Italian charm.
