About my time in Morocco

I spent just under 3 weeks in Morocco in April 2026. Earlier in the year I was traveling around Europe and had gone to Portugal and Spain. I had spent nearly 90 days in the Schengen area and could no longer stay within Schengen countries.  so naturally I had to explore other options and that led me to Morocco.

Morocco was nearby and was on a continent I had never been to before.  the weather was going to be warm which is something I was looking forward to since my European winter was cold.

I have to admit I was a little nervous to go to Morocco. it's a country that is very different from the United States of America and I wasn't sure if I would be welcomed as an American citizen.  I try not to let the opinions of others sway me into or out of going to a destination.  I prefer to make the decision on my own based on my own research. I also like to take recommendations from friends and this is a country that one of my close friends had been to and liked.

How Morocco pleasantly surprised me

If I'm being honest, I wasn't quite sure how I would like Morocco. I went into it with a bit of hesitation but I also went into it with an open mind.  I knew it was going to be a very different country from what I'm used to, especially because of how their culture views and treats women.

However I found the people were incredibly nice and very welcoming. Everywhere I went, people asked me where I was from and just wanted to know basic general information or have a brief conversation. They were very surprised that I was visiting all the way from the United States. The majority of people I spoke to spoke in English, but you will find people speaking Arabic (the primary language used), French, and Amazigh.

Marrakesh, The City I Visited in Morocco

As of now, I've only been to one city in Morocco, and that's Marrakesh. Marrakesh is one of the most popular cities in Morocco and for good reasons. There's so much to do, like explore the Medina, visit the up-and-coming Gueliz area, venture out to the desert, go on hot-air balloon rides, and much more.
