Why I Went to Cozumel

What started as a single day trip from Playa del Carmen turned into two weeks.

I was in the middle of a bad stretch of sargassum season on the mainland — the seaweed and its smell had kept me out of the ocean for weeks — and Cozumel's west-side beaches were where I finally got the clear-water swim I'd been chasing.

One day trip turned into a weekend, and once it was time to leave Playa del Carmen, I packed up and came back to Cozumel for two more weeks instead.

Snorkel the Palancar and Columbia reefs

The clearest water I found anywhere in Mexico, and the whole reason I kept extending my time here.

Spend a beach day on the west side of the island

This side of the island stays clear even when sargassum is hitting the mainland — Playa Palancar is an easy, low-key spot to swim and lounge.

Where to Stay in Cozumel

I stayed in Centro, in San Miguel — just two blocks from the water and walkable to
everything I needed: restaurants, the main square, and the ferry dock. If walkability and
easy access to food and daily life matter to you, Centro is a great home base. Just know that the beaches near Centro are rocky, so you'll need water shoes. If sandy beach access is your top priority over walkability, look further down the west coast toward
Palancar instead. I chose to take taxis to and from those beaches instead.

Is Cozumel worth visiting, or just a cruise stop?

It's worth a real stay, not just a shore excursion. I spent two weeks in Centro and never ran out of things to do — the reefs, the west-side beaches, and San Miguel's food scene are all easily worth multiple days.

How do you get to Cozumel?

The most common way is by ferry from Playa del Carmen, which takes about 45 minutes. There's also an international airport in Cozumel with direct and connecting flights.

Is Cozumel safe for solo travelers?

Yes! I stayed in Centro and felt comfortable walking around on my own, including in the evenings near the main square and waterfront.

What's the best time of year to visit Cozumel?

November through April is the driest stretch, but I visited in late June and still had clear water on the island's west side, even during a rough sargassum season on the mainland.

Cozumel or Playa del Carmen — which is better?

They serve different purposes. Playa del Carmen has more nightlife and mainland connections; Cozumel has clearer, more reliable water and a slower island pace. I actually left Playa del Carmen for Cozumel specifically to get better swimming conditions.
