About Gozo
Just a short ferry ride from Malta’s main island lies Gozo—a peaceful, picturesque escape that feels like stepping into another world. Known for its laid-back pace, rugged coastline, and local charm, Gozo is the quieter sister island where you can truly slow down, connect with nature, and enjoy island life at its simplest.
During my week on Gozo, I based myself in Xlendi, a small coastal village surrounded by dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear water. It’s the kind of place where mornings start with a swim in the bay and evenings end with dinner by the sea as the sun dips behind the rocks. Whether you’re exploring coastal trails, diving into hidden coves, or just relaxing with a glass of wine by the water, Gozo has a way of making time stand still.
While the island is small, it’s full of surprises—like the Citadel in Victoria, Gozo’s historic capital perched on a hill with panoramic views, or the breathtaking Ta’ Cenc Cliffs, where the Mediterranean stretches endlessly before you. If you’re looking for a more authentic, slower-paced experience compared to the busier main island, Gozo is the perfect spot to unwind and explore at your own rhythm.
The Top Things to Do in Gozo

This small but stunning island is overflowing with charm—from sun-soaked coastal villages and ancient temples to hidden swimming spots and breathtaking cliffs. Whether you’re visiting for a day or staying for a week, Gozo offers a slower, more peaceful side of Malta that’s perfect for travelers craving a mix of relaxation, local culture, and natural beauty.
Here are some of my favorite things to do in Gozo that will make your visit unforgettable. Keep in mind most of my time was spent in Xlendi, so it will be mostly things to do there.
Swim and relax in Xlendi Bay
If you’re staying in Xlendi, you don’t have to go far for beauty. The bay is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or just floating in calm, clear water surrounded by dramatic cliffs. In the evening, grab dinner seaside and watch the sun melt into the horizon—it’s the ultimate Gozo moment.
Explore Victoria and the Citadel
The island’s capital, Victoria (Rabat), is home to the historic Citadel, a fortified city with incredible panoramic views. Wander through the narrow alleys, visit the small museums, and take in the stunning architecture that reflects centuries of history.
Explore the Cliffs
All across the island, you'll find incredible cliffs with stunning sea views. Most of my time in Xlendi consisted of seeing cliffs, even from my Airbnb's balcony. But I branched out and went on a short hike which led me to even more stunning cliffs.
Where to Stay in Gozo
One of the best parts about visiting Gozo is that no matter where you stay, you’re never far from the sea, charming villages, or stunning viewpoints. The island is small and easy to explore, but each area has its own vibe—so it’s worth choosing your base depending on what kind of experience you want.
Xlendi – For coastal charm and relaxation
If you’re looking for a peaceful seaside escape, Xlendi is a dream. This small village is tucked between cliffs and the sea, with waterfront restaurants, swimming spots, and sunset views that never get old. I stayed here for a week and loved waking up steps away from the bay. It’s perfect for solo travelers or couples who want a calm, walkable area with great food and easy access to the water. Travel Tips for Visiting Gozo
Gozo may be small, but a few insider tips can make your trip even smoother and more enjoyable. Here’s what I learned during my week on the island:
Getting Around
The public bus system is easy to navigate and connects most major towns and attractions. Keep in mind that buses aren’t always on time, so plan with some flexibility. For more freedom, consider renting a car, scooter, or e-bike, especially if you want to explore remote areas or chase sunsets across the island.
Plan Your Ferry Ride
To reach Gozo, take the Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa on Malta’s main island to Mġarr Harbour. The ride is about 25 minutes, and ferries run frequently. Arrive a little early during peak travel times to grab a spot, especially if you’re bringing a car.
Pack for Adventure and Sun
Gozo is all about the outdoors! Bring comfortable walking shoes for cobblestone streets and cliff trails, a swimsuit for swimming in bays like Xlendi, and sunscreen, because the Mediterranean sun is strong.
Time Your Visit
For smaller crowds and pleasant weather, try to visit April–June or September–October. Summer is lively but can get busy, especially in popular coastal towns.
Take It Slow
Gozo is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. Spend mornings by the water, afternoons exploring villages or temples, and evenings enjoying local cuisine at a seaside restaurant. The slower pace is part of the charm!
Use a Travel Planner
