Story Time!
One day while I was staying in Aguas Calientes, it was a beautiful sunny day so I decided I would take a long walk and go to the Machu Picchu entrance. When I left my hotel, I was greeted by this pup. I pet him, and continued on towards the center of town.
When I got to the center of town, I realized he was still with me.
I continued on the road towards the Machu Picchu entrance, and he continued with me. If he got too far ahead, he would run back to me. When he chased the buses, he always came back to my side.
This continued for the entire walk out and back, which was a few hours long.
My heart melted, because I thought how could this sweet baby be a stray. I wanted to take him into my hotel with me.
As we neared my hotel, he turned down the street towards my hotel, and I didin't. I decided to go look for food. But my heart was crushed because I didn't see him again.
Fast forward to the next day, I was working from my hotel's restaurant. I looked up from my laptop at one point, and there he was, walking by with a collar on. He had a home. I accidentally borrowed him for a few hours but returned him home. Haha!
Where to Stay in Aguas Calientes
If you're planning to go to Machu Picchu without a guided tour from Cusco, I recommend staying in the small launching pad town of Aguas Calientes for a few nights. This tiny town is very beautiful and sees many guests come and go as they make their way to one of the 7 Wonders of the World.
