10 Tips for Aspiring Travel Content Creators
Share
Have you ever scrolled through Instagram or TikTok, saw someone sharing dreamy travel videos, and thought: “Wow, I’d love to do that too”?
Maybe you’ve even posted a few photos yourself, but you’re not sure how to get consistent, grow an audience, or stand out among thousands of other creators.
First things first: every travel content creator you admire started right where you are now — with a dream, a phone, and the courage to share their story. You don’t need fancy gear, thousands of followers, or viral videos to begin. What you do need are the right habits, a willingness to experiment, and the confidence to show up as your authentic self.
Here are 10 beginner-friendly tips to help you start creating content you’re proud of — and enjoy the process along the way.
1. Start With What You Have
It’s easy to believe you need a $2,000 camera or the latest drone to be a “real” creator. The truth? Your smartphone is already a powerful content tool. Most successful creators began with nothing more than their iPhone and some creativity.
Instead of waiting until you can afford fancy gear, focus on learning to capture moments with what’s in your pocket. Authenticity will resonate far more than polished equipment ever could.
I myself only use my iPhone.
2. Master the Basics of Photography & Video
Good content isn’t about expensive tools — it’s about using simple techniques well. Start by practicing the rule of thirds (place your subject slightly off-center), looking for leading lines (like roads, bridges, or shorelines that guide the eye), and shooting during golden hour (soft light just after sunrise or before sunset).
When it comes to editing, beginner-friendly apps like Lightroom Mobile, Canva (my go-to), or CapCut can instantly improve your photos and videos without requiring professional skills. A little attention to detail goes a long way.
3. Focus on Storytelling, Not Just Pretty Pictures
Pretty landscapes are everywhere on social media — but what really captures attention is the story behind them.
Think about the before, during, and after of each travel moment. Instead of just sharing a photo of Machu Picchu, tell the story of the 4 a.m. wake-up call, the high-altitude breathlessness, and the awe of finally seeing the ruins emerge from the clouds.

Your audience isn’t just looking for visuals; they want to feel like they’re there with you.
4. Be Consistent, Not Perfect
Here’s the hard truth: waiting for the “perfect” post often means you won’t post at all. Consistency is what builds trust, visibility, and growth.
Start with something realistic — maybe two or three posts per week. This helps you build the muscle of creating regularly without burning out. Over time, you’ll naturally get better, faster, and more confident.
Remember: done is better than perfect. Start posting!
5. Engage With Your Community
Content creation isn’t just about broadcasting — it’s about connection. The people who comment on your posts are real humans, and taking the time to respond makes a huge difference.
Ask questions in your captions, reply to DMs, and show genuine interest in your audience. Even if your follower count is small, you’re building relationships that can turn into loyal supporters. That goes a long way in growing your accounts!
6. Share Both Wins and Struggles
If all you post are “perfect” travel shots, people might admire you — but they won’t necessarily connect with you. Authenticity comes from sharing the whole journey, not just the highlights.
Talk about the time you missed a train in Italy, got caught in the rain which ruined your suitcase, or ordered the wrong dish in a new language (then ate shrimp even though you hate it). These moments make you relatable and remind your audience that travel isn’t flawless — and that’s what makes it fun.

7. Batch Create & Plan Ahead
Travel can be unpredictable. One day you’re exploring beaches, the next you’re stuck on a long bus ride. To keep up with content, try batch creating — capture multiple photos and videos in one session so you have plenty to post later.
Scheduling tools like Later, Planoly, or even Instagram’s built-in scheduler can help you stay consistent without feeling glued to your phone. This way, you can spend more time enjoying the adventure in real life, and in real-time.
8. Experiment With Formats
Don’t box yourself into one style of content. Experiment with Reels, carousel posts, short-form TikToks, or even long-form storytelling on YouTube or your blog.
Not only does experimenting help you discover what you enjoy most, but it also shows you where your audience engages best. You might surprise yourself with what resonates!
9. Keep Learning
The content creation world is always evolving — algorithms change, platforms rise and fall, and trends shift quickly. The best creators are lifelong learners.
Start with free resources like YouTube tutorials, podcasts, or blogs. Over time, you can invest in courses or communities that help you grow further. Treat each piece of content as practice, not a final exam.
10. Protect the Joy of Travel
This is the MOST important tip: don’t let content creation take away from the actual joy of traveling. It’s easy to get so focused on capturing the “perfect shot” that you forget to soak in the moment.
Set boundaries for yourself. Maybe you take 15 minutes to capture content in the morning, then put your phone away until evening. Or designate certain experiences as “off-camera.”
Remember: your travels are meant to be lived first, shared second.

Becoming a travel content creator doesn’t happen overnight — but it also doesn’t require perfection, fancy gear, or a massive following to begin. Every creator you admire started with small steps, imperfect posts, and a willingness to learn along the way.
