Cusco for Solo Travelers: A Guide to Exploring the City Alone

Why Cusco is Perfect for Solo Travelers

Cusco, Peru—a city that blends ancient Inca heritage with vibrant modern culture—is a dream destination for solo travelers like you (and me, of course).

With its welcoming locals, rich history, and bustling atmosphere, it’s no wonder that more and more travelers are choosing Cusco as a solo adventure destination. Whether you’re traveling alone for the first time or are a seasoned solo explorer, Cusco offers endless opportunities for discovery.

Here, I'm sharing everything you need to know about solo travel in Cusco. From safety tips to solo-friendly activities and places to meet fellow travelers, I’ve got you covered.

Let’s dive into why Cusco solo travel is such a rewarding experience!

1. Is Cusco Safe for Solo Travelers?

Safety is often a top concern for solo travelers, and understandably so. It's one of the very first things I research when I'm choosing a new destination.

The good news is that Cusco is one of the safest cities in Peru for solo adventurers. Like any destination, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings and follow basic precautions, but Cusco’s welcoming culture makes it particularly friendly for solo exploration.

Here are a few safety tips for solo travelers in Cusco:

  • Stay in well-populated areas: Stick to the historic center of Cusco, especially around the Plaza de Armas, where the environment is tourist-friendly and bustling with activity.
  • Use reliable transport: If you need a ride, opt for registered taxis or ridesharing apps like Uber, which are generally safe and affordable.
  • Avoid walking alone late at night: While Cusco is relatively safe, it's still best to avoid dimly lit or deserted areas after dark, especially if you're not familiar with the city.

In general, Cusco is considered safe for solo travelers, and many people travel alone to experience the magic of the city and the surrounding Sacred Valley.

2. Solo-Friendly Activities to Do in Cusco

Cusco is a city FULL of history, culture, and adventure, and there’s no shortage of activities perfect for those exploring solo.

Here are a few ideas to make the most of your time in Cusco:

  • Explore the Inca Ruins
Cusco is surrounded by ancient Inca ruins, many of which are perfect for solo exploration. The iconic Sacsayhuamán ruins offer impressive views of the city, and the peaceful walk around the Qenqo site is perfect for reflecting in nature. You can visit these sites at your own pace, take in the stunning surroundings, and snap photos without the pressure of keeping up with a group.

  • Join a Walking Tour of the City
One of the best ways to meet other solo travelers is by joining a walking tour of the city. Many companies offer free walking tours of Cusco, where you’ll learn about the city’s history, architecture, and Inca heritage. It’s a great way to connect with other travelers while getting a deeper understanding of Cusco’s culture.

  • Trek to the Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)
If you’re seeking an adventure, consider taking a day trip to Rainbow Mountain. While the hike is challenging, it’s an incredible experience that offers breathtaking views. Many solo travelers join organized tours to Rainbow Mountain, which is a great way to meet like-minded adventurers. Just make sure to acclimatize to the altitude beforehand! (This is one of my top day trips from Cusco)

  • Visit the Sacred Valley
The Sacred Valley is just a short trip from Cusco, and it’s home to stunning landscapes and Inca sites like Ollantaytambo, Pisac, and Moray. Many solo travelers opt for day tours to the Sacred Valley, which allows you to explore the region with a guide and other tourists, or simply rent a bike and explore on your own. (This is another one of my top day trips from Cusco)

  • Take a Cooking Class or Attend a Cultural Workshop
Want to dive into local culture? Join a Peruvian cooking class or a traditional weaving workshop in Cusco. These experiences not only teach you new skills but also provide a chance to meet other solo travelers and locals.

3. Where to Meet Other Solo Travelers in Cusco

Cusco is a popular destination for backpackers, solo travelers, and digital nomads, so finding like-minded people is easy!

Here are some of the best places and ways to meet other solo travelers:

  • Cafes and Restaurants
Cusco’s café culture is vibrant, with many spots offering not only excellent coffee but also a welcoming atmosphere for solo travelers. Popular places like Café de la Marca and Qucharitas Café are frequented by travelers and locals alike, making it a great place to strike up conversations. Many travelers also recommend Café Ayllu for its relaxing environment and strong Wi-Fi (ideal for solo travelers working remotely).

  • Hostels and Guesthouses
Cusco is known for its backpacker-friendly hostels, which are ideal for solo travelers looking to meet new people. Hostel Samana Wasi and The Kokopelli Hostel are well-loved by solo travelers, offering organized activities and group tours. Many hostels have communal spaces, kitchens, and social events where you can connect with fellow adventurers.

  • Group Tours and Day Trips
Whether you’re hiking the Inca Trail, visiting the Sacred Valley, or exploring Machu Picchu, booking a group tour is a great way to meet other solo travelers. Many travelers meet people during group hikes or tours and form connections that lead to further adventures together. Solo travelers often feel more at ease joining group activities in Cusco as it provides a balance between independent exploration and social interaction.

4. Best Neighborhoods for Solo Travelers in Cusco

Choosing the right place to stay in Cusco can enhance your experience as a solo traveler.

Here are some of the best neighborhoods for solo adventurers:

  • Centro Histórico (Historic Center)
Staying near the Plaza de Armas puts you right in the heart of the action. The historic center is where you’ll find most of Cusco’s major attractions, such as the Cusco Cathedral, Qorikancha, and the San Pedro Market. It’s also easy to find cafes, restaurants, and tourist services, making it a convenient location for solo travelers.

  • San Blas
If you’re looking for a more laid-back, artistic neighborhood, San Blas is a fantastic choice. Known for its narrow cobblestone streets, bohemian vibe, and colorful markets, San Blas is great for solo travelers who want to experience a more local, authentic side of Cusco. The area is also home to several cozy guesthouses and boutique hotels.

  • San Pedro
San Pedro is an up-and-coming area with great local markets and a quieter atmosphere compared to the city center. It’s a good spot for solo travelers looking for a more residential experience, and it’s just a short walk from the main tourist attractions.

5. Solo Travel Tips for Cusco

Here are some tips to truly make the most of your experience in Cusco:

  • Acclimatize to the Altitude: Cusco sits at over 3,400 meters (11,200 feet) above sea level, so it’s important to take it easy for the first couple of days. Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals, and consider sipping on mate de coca (coca leaf tea) to help with altitude sickness.

  • Pack Light and Smart: As a solo traveler, it’s easier to get around if you’re carrying only what you need. Opt for a daypack for daily outings and keep your important documents, money, and electronics secure in a money belt or a travel pouch.

  • Respect Local Customs: Peru has a rich cultural heritage, so it’s important to respect local customs and traditions. Learn a few basic phrases in Spanish or Quechua, as this will help you connect with locals and show respect for their culture.
